Don Quixote Illustrations
Few literary works left such an impression on Jürg Henggeler as Cervantes' Don Quixote. At the young age of 19, while still a student at art school (Kunstgerwerbschule) in Lucerne, he produced the largest series of his artistic career.
In more than 70 tondo illustrations, he depicts the tumultuous journey of Don Quixote, his horse Rosinante, and his page Sancho Pansa.
His style convinces by way of a complete reduction to a few key characters, with the help of auxiliary shapes, enabling him to capture the relevant ideas in various scenes of Cervantes' work. In doing so, his depictions neither detract nor impose upon the imaginations of the book's audience.
